The Police Department’s Animal Control Unit frequently receives calls concerning barking dogs and other animals responsible for noises and nuisances.  This occurs most often in warm weather when windows are open.  It is against the law to allow dogs to bark excessively or continuously and they may be in violation of the Newport Beach Municipal Code.

If you have a neighbor who has a dog that barks excessively or continuously, first, try to talk to the neighbor, they may not be aware their animal is disturbing anyone.  Some owners find that veterinarian prescribed medication can be an effective problem solver.  If that is unsuccessful, and you know the owners’ name and address, you can send a certified letter to them (with return receipt requested) outlining the problem.  This may be useful if it is necessary to file a report with the Animal Control Unit.

Animal Control Officers investigate complaints of barking dogs within the city.  To file a complaint, or for further information, call 644-3717.

In the event you are unable to resolve this problem you may need to consult a private attorney for legal alternatives.
